Lesson plan: long vowel phoneme -ee-

Whole Class: Text Level (approx. 15 mins)
  1. Read the poem to the class.
  2. Talk about rhyming words and notice the rhyming pattern.
  3. Model read one verse at a time, then invite the children to join in and read with you.
  4. As a class make up another member of the Creep family e.g. grandpa, auntie, cousin, and think of a pair of -ee- rhymes to create an alternative fourth verse.
  5. Model write this for the children and encourage them to come out and write any letters or words that they know.
  6. Read this new verse together.

Whole Class: Word level (approx. 15 mins)
  1. Model write -ee- on the board and practice saying the sound together. Talk about the shape of the letters.
  2. As a class, write some letter -e's- in the air, draw with a finger on the floor etc.
  3. Ask the children to look at each other's faces or look in the mirror when they say -ee- and notice the shape their mouths make. Can they explain why photographers ask us to say cheese?
  4. Ask the class to scan the poem for -ee- words. Invite children to come out and draw rings around these and to read them out.
  5. Write the -ee- words from the rhyme on the board.
  6. Help the class to focus on the onset (letter or letters before the vowel) and the rime (vowel plus following letter or letters). Split words into onsets and rimes.
    If you have time.
  7. Read or say some of the additional rhymes and ask the class to put up their hands whenever they hear a word with long -ee- sound. Write these words on the board.
