The Sandcastle Quiz
|


Requires the Flash 4 plugin and a multimedia
computer (i.e. with sound).
The player must fill in the gap in each
word displayed in the sand by clicking on
the sandpie with the correct vowel phoneme
spelling.
Print
out your sandcastle
At the end of the game the player can print
out the sandcastle with the words displayed
on it. The print out suggests that the player
picks out all the vowel phonemes in the
words on the sandcastle.
Using
the game
The game reinforces the common spelling
patterns for the nine vowel phonemes featuring
in the Year 2 word level objectives in the
National Literacy Strategy. Players are
given opportunities to choose and try alternative
patterns with correct choices being rewarded.
It may be used as independent work within
the Literacy Hour, offering word level work
relevant to these objectives from the NLS
Framework for Key Stage 1, Year 2:-

Write
a Postcard
|

Requires the Flash 4 plugin and a multimedia
computer (i.e. with sound).
The player picks out the vowel phonemes
and chooses the right spelling variation
for words with vowel phonemes on alternate
sentences until the postcard is complete.
Print out your postcards
At the end of the exercise the player can
print out the completed postcard and can
highlight all the vowel phonemes again.
Using
the game
This is an exercise in identifying, reading
and spelling the nine vowel phonemes from
the National Literacy Strategy year 2 word
level objectives in context. Single and multisyllabic
words are included.
It may be used as independent work within
the Literacy Hour, offering word level work
relevant to these objectives from the NLS

Some of these printable activities combine

focus on individual phonemes.
Activity sheets for the Literacy Hour

on an individual phoneme vowel while the
10th covers all of them. These activities
are intended for independent group work
and require a minimum of adult supervision.
The Race to the Lighthouse There
are clues that must be solved as the players
race each other around the board. This game
provides practise in reading and useds all
the vowel phonemes.
Give us a Clue! This word lotto
covers all the vowel phonemes. The players
have to recognise the words on the lotto
card from the clues that are read out.

fruit machine that makes 3 letter CVC words.
Level
1 - the player spins the 1st reel to
make new words with the same word ending.
The player must sort the words into real
and not real word lists.

2 - the player spins the 1st or 3rd
reel to make real words built around the
same medial vowel.
Level
3 - the player spins any reel to try
to make words that fit a given description,
e.g. animals (dog, pig).
Teacher's
Control Panel - can be used to configure
the game to focus on specific word endings
and medial vowels.
Print your words - at the end of
a game in any level the player can print
out a record of their game. The sheet includes
the player's name, the words that were collected
and the words that were missed with an opportunity
to now write these words into the correct
list.
