The Sandcastle Quiz

Sandcastle Quiz

Requires the Flash 4 plugin and a multimedia computer (i.e. with sound).

The player must fill in the gap in each word displayed in the sand by clicking on the sandpie with the correct vowel phoneme spelling.

Print out your sandcastle
At the end of the game the player can print out the sandcastle with the words displayed on it. The print out suggests that the player picks out all the vowel phonemes in the words on the sandcastle.

Using the game
The game reinforces the common spelling patterns for the nine vowel phonemes featuring in the Year 2 word level objectives in the National Literacy Strategy. Players are given opportunities to choose and try alternative patterns with correct choices being rewarded.

It may be used as independent work within the Literacy Hour, offering word level work relevant to these objectives from the NLS Framework for Key Stage 1, Year 2:-

Write a Postcard
 

Write a Postcard
Requires the Flash 4 plugin and a multimedia computer (i.e. with sound).

The player picks out the vowel phonemes and chooses the right spelling variation for words with vowel phonemes on alternate sentences until the postcard is complete.

Print out your postcards
At the end of the exercise the player can print out the completed postcard and can highlight all the vowel phonemes again.

Using the game
This is an exercise in identifying, reading and spelling the nine vowel phonemes from the National Literacy Strategy year 2 word level objectives in context. Single and multisyllabic words are included.

It may be used as independent work within the Literacy Hour, offering word level work relevant to these objectives from the NLS Framework for Key Stage 1, Year 2:-

A set of 10 Realvideo clips from the Words and Pictures TV series that demonstrate joined up writing with phrases that concentrate on the vowel phonemes.

Practice
Each clip has a print off sheet that offers activities that encourage children to practice that phrase and vowel phoneme.

Use
This area may be used for independent work within the Literacy Hour. It offers word level work relevant to this objective from the NLS Framework for Key Stage 1, Year 2:-
to begin using and practising the four basic handwriting joins
to practise handwriting in conjuction with the phonic and spelling patterns being taught.

Some of these printable activities combine a number of vowel phonemes while others focus on individual phonemes.

10 new activity sheets - 9 of which focus on an individual phoneme vowel while the 10th covers all of them. These activities are intended for independent group work and require a minimum of adult supervision.

The Race to the Lighthouse There are clues that must be solved as the players race each other around the board. This game provides practise in reading and useds all the vowel phonemes.

Give us a Clue! This word lotto covers all the vowel phonemes. The players have to recognise the words on the lotto card from the clues that are read out.

CVC Words

Requires the Shockwave 7 plugin.

A fruit machine that makes 3 letter CVC words.

Level 1 - the player spins the 1st reel to make new words with the same word ending. The player must sort the words into real and not real word lists.

Level 2 - the player spins the 1st or 3rd reel to make real words built around the same medial vowel.

Level 3 - the player spins any reel to try to make words that fit a given description, e.g. animals (dog, pig).

Teacher's Control Panel - can be used to configure the game to focus on specific word endings and medial vowels.

Print your words - at the end of a game in any level the player can print out a record of their game. The sheet includes the player's name, the words that were collected and the words that were missed with an opportunity to now write these words into the correct list.

This game may be used as independent work within the Literacy Hour, it offers word level work relevant to these objectives from the NLS Framework for Key Stage 1, Year 1 Term 1:

  • phonic and spelling investigations and practice;
  • exploring and playing with rhyming patterns; generating rhyming strings, e.g. fat, hat, pat
  • blending phonemes to read CVC words in rhyming and non-rhyming sets
  • representing in writing the three phonemes in CVC words

    10 activity sheets that may need a little more supervision and include making word slides and word wheels. These sheets can be fixed together along with a front cover to make this term's scrapbook.


    Soundcatcher
    A new game that comes in 3 versions: initial sound, final phoneme and medial vowel. Each version comes with 4 different game boards, a 'letter cube' and a set of Soundcatchers. Players must must match the letter on the cube to a picture on their board.

    Pairs
    A cut-out set of pairs cards with 8 cards per vowel. All cards feature a CVC word and an illustration. Play with all 40 cards or just those containing specific vowels.

    Write your own poem
    10 worksheets with a short framework to help children write a poem of their own that uses CVC words.

    A new game that encourages children to build words by blending together a start sound (onset) and end sound (rime). The game can be configured to focus on specific start and end clusters, and can be played at three different levels of difficulty. Includes an optional printout sheet that shows a player's progress in a given game.

    This game may be used for independent work within the Literacy Hour, it offers word level work relevant to these objectives from the NLS Framework for Key Stage 1, Year 1 Term 2:

  • to investigate, read and spell words ending in ff, ll, ss, ck, ng;
