Online Activities
Curriculum Relevance: Key Stage 2 History 2a, 9
Lesson Preparation: Save and print out images of objects, clothes and homes. Use in conjunction with activities described.
Managing Computer Allocation: 5 minute challenge. Pairs of students compete against the clock to gather information on a specific activity.
Suggestions for follow up activities:
Viking Invasion
- As an introduction to the topic, read through with class asking questions:What countries did the Vikings come from? What jobs did the Vikings do? Where did the Vikings travel to and how did they get there? What is a pirate?
- Ask class to find 3 interesting pieces of information from the website
- Look at the map. Where did the Vikings come from? What are the names of the countries without labels? Did the Vikings take over all of Britain? How does the map help us to answer this question?
- Discuss Key Words e.g. AD, Danelaw
- Why are some words highlighted?
Viking Life
- Before looking at the site, ask children to draw their ideas of what Vikings wore.
- Compare children's drawings with pictures on site.
- Compare houses and clothes in the picture with how houses and clothes look like today.
- Children design Viking wear - what would it need to do?
Viking Beliefs
- After reading descriptions of Viking gods/goddesses ask children to draw what they think they looked like.
- Ask the children to write a short myth involving one of the gods.
- Write gods' names in runes.
Trade, Travel & Exploration
- Children imagine they are boat builders and design and write about their own long boats.
What happened to the Vikings?
- Ask children to imagine that they are King Alfred - how will they get the Vikings out?
- Research places nearby that end in ‘Thorpe’ and ‘ay’.
Thorkel's Challenge
- Use these quizzes at the end of each section as an assessment.
- Children can make up their own quizzes and pass around class.
Thorkel and the trading ship
- Children write about where Thorkel is going to on the ship.
- Ask the children to imagine they have a shop in the village. What does it sell? Write a description.
- Children work through the activity, looking in detail at interior and content of each building.
