Introduction:
  • Previous Knowledge - children could have discussed why people move around and away from where they were born.

  • Group Activities:
Introduce the idea of the Vikings - people who invaded this country a long time ago. What might we want to find out about them? Brainstorm questions on large paper or board.
  • Reduce the questions down to those they will be able to answer by looking at the web site such as:
  • When did they live?
    When did they invade?
    Where were they from?
    What did they do here?
  • Explain to children that they will use website to find the answers to the questions.
  • Whilst they are looking can they find any other useful pieces of information? Are there any difficult words? What materials are rare? What clues are there about clothes? Homes?
  • Get class together. Can we answer the questions now? Go through answers; write up onto large paper.
Plenary

Teaching Activities
Introduction:
Previous knowledge - children should know who the Vikings were and where they came from.

Individual Activities:
  • As a class look at enlarged copy of the map showing where Vikings travelled to.
  • Look at the key. Which country did the Vikings come from?
  • Look at the drawing of the Long boat Why do we have no photographs of it? Why did the longboats sail so well?
  • Read through text and ask class: How did the Vikings find their way when sailing? Why do they think the Vikings were good boat builders? What would they decorate their boat with?
  • Children to imagine they are Viking sailors. Write about their voyage to new land (use map). Use knowledge from lesson - talk about boats, where they were going and why etc. Their writing could include: Where they set sail from? Where were they going to and why? What were they taking with them? How were they feeling? What was their job on the longboat?
  • Model first two lines of writing with class. For example: "This morning will set sail from home on a long journey to a new and strange land. I am full of excitement and fear. What will my new home be like?"
Extension Work:
  • Draw a picture of their boat, play Viking Explorer Game.
  • Have children been to any places Vikings invaded in Europe? Have the children seen any evidence of Viking settlements e.g. at York
