To find out about the past by looking at old objects or buildings that have been buried under the ground
blood-feud - An argument between two families that involves fighting or killings.


carving -
A design cut out of wood
chieftain - A village leader
conquer - To beat an enemy and control them using force
craftsman - A person who is skilled in a craft

The area of England ruled by the Vikings
explorer - Someone who travels to unfamiliar places to discover new things
feast - A special meal for a large group of people
fertility - The ability to have children
festival - A special event
freeman - A person free to choose who they worked for

longship - A Viking boat

mischievous -
Someone who causes trouble
monastery - The building where monks live
mysterious Something strange, unknown
norse - From the north
Norse myths - Stories told by the Vikings about their gods and goddesses

remote -
A way to describe a place that is far away from other settlements
runes - The name given to the Viking alphabet
sculpture - A figure or design made in wood, stone, plaster or metal
slave - A person who is someone else's property


thatched -
A roof covered in straw
thing - An open air meeting held to discuss the law
traders - A person who sells goods
turf - A layer of grass with roots and soil
waterproof - A way of describing something that does not let in water such as a coat or roof
