Teaching Activities

Introduction
  • Visit the Two Cities website Home Page.
  • Discuss with the children how they can go on a City Tour of Belfast. Provide a print-off of the city map for children to make notes about the tour.
  • Discuss how to use City Life to seek answers to the question: 'What is it like living in Belfast?' through the views of people who live in the city. Provide Worksheet 3 for the children to record children's views.
Group Activities

Groups use the Two Cities website to go on a city tour and collect information about Belfast, through the views of one child, in text and/or audio form.

Group 1 Select Belfast, then City Tour, from the homepage, to find out something about the capital city of Northern Ireland. Use City Life to find out what Matthew tells you about living in Belfast.

Group 2 Select Belfast, then City Tour, from the homepage, to find out something about the capital city of Northern Ireland. Use City Life to find out what Lisa tells you about living in Belfast.

Individual

With the information you have, from one child, answer the question: Would you like to live there? Why/why not?

Plenary

Pupils give, and discuss, responses to the questions: Would you like to live there? Why/why not?
Teacher creates lists of points for and against living in Belfast.

In subsequent lessons pupils could find out the views of the other children, through their answers to the same questions. Do the children agree with each other? They could decide which child they would most like to meet, and why.

They should also find out the opinions of the two adults, Leah and Nora, who talk about their memories of the city and views about how it has changed. Pupils could then complete Worksheet 4b.

(For Mexico City the children are Maria, Joan, Ivanna and Gerardo and the adult is Carmen.)

Homework

Pupils answer, for their own locality, the question posed to the Belfast children.
Complete Worksheet 4a.
