Case studies

Headteacher, Gwynfa Lilly, explains how their Breathing Place began.

"We've been doing Breathing Place projects for two years and now get regular updates from the BBC website. The school has 40 pupils in total. Everyone is involved in the Wildlife Team with each class responsible for one Do One Thing activity.

"In 2009 the school organised a Dig and Plant Day, when children and parents planted apple, quince, pear and plum trees as well as blackcurrant and blackberry hedges. These have taken very well and we hope they will produce fruit next summer.

"An after school Gardening Club runs weekly and has been busy tidying a vegetable plot on the school grounds. Carrots, cabbage, leeks and runner beans grow very well here and end up in healthy eating cookery classes and then winter cawl (soup) or summer salads.

"During the winter months the children take part in birdwatching. A mobile hide that they set up in front of the school lets them sit and watch for garden birds such as robins, blue tits and blackbirds. Nest boxes are fixed to several trees in the school grounds.

"The school has a thriving pond - home to newts and frogs - and great for pond dipping in the summer. A thriving mini-beast logpile enlivens science classes about insect identification.

"Next will be a sensory garden, an area where the children can go for some peace and quiet or just to enjoy nature around them. Handmade mosaics on stones will become stepping stones, cutting through the garden. Seats will allow the children to relax and chill out.

"All these projects have involved the children in their natural environment and let them get their hands dirty. They've learnt so much and we hope to continue the community involvement."
