Spring - Sowing Seeds

Spring term's Do One Thing: sowing seeds

The first Do One Thing activity is seed sowing. The BBC Breathing Places activity pack contains all the information you need to take part in seed planting.

The seeds

  • Sunflower (Giant single) - Giant yellow flowers that can grow up to 250cm tall - the seed heads attract both birds and mini beasts.
  • wild flowers
  • Corn Poppy - Bright red blooms which self-seed readily, these seeds have a colourful history.
  • Borage - A herb with an interesting past, its blue flowers will brighten up any Breathing Place.
  • Pot Marigold - A favourite cottage garden flower and herb - golden flowers will bloom throughout the summer to put on a good show.
  • Cornflower - With attractive vivid blue flowers, these hardy annuals are an excellent addition to any wildlife area.

What can children do?

Children will be able to:

  • help prepare the ground or pots that the seeds will be sown in
  • sow the seeds into the soil
  • nurture and maintain the seeds while they grow
  • harvest some of the seeds to replant next year
  • carry out activities based around seed planting
  • learn more about the seed plants they are sowing
  • learn more about creating their school Breathing Place
