Relax your mind

Do you panic about exams? If you feel like you're not coping with school life, get to grips with these relaxation techniques.

Don't worry if you're feeling worried and anxious about your exams because it's perfectly normal. They are big milestones in your education and it's natural to feel a bit apprehensive about them. The important thing is to learn how to deal with those stresses and teach yourself how to relax.

"Imagine all the tension in your body flowing out"

Five steps to relaxation

  1. Find a quiet room where you won't be disturbed, and lie on the floor and close your eyes.
  2. Breathe deeply and slowly through your nose to really fill your lungs.
  3. Hold your breath for a count of three then let the air out slowly through your mouth. Repeat this three times. When you breathe out imagine all the tension in your body flowing out with the air.
  4. Next, work through the body and tighten the muscle groups one by one. Start at the feet and screw up your toes as hard as you can. Hold for a count of three and relax. Flex your ankles, hold for three and relax then clench the muscles in your calf and so on.
  5. When you have mastered the technique you can just focus on the muscles that are feeling tight.

Indulge yourself!

  • If you find it difficult to switch off your mind whilst relaxing, try using a relaxation tape. You can buy one or even better, make one yourself. Record a few of your favourite calming tracks and play them while you relax.
  • Light some aromatherapy candles and lie down on the sofa to chill out.
  • Meet some mates and play some sport or go shopping.
  • Have a long hot soak in the bath.
