What it's Like to Star in a Music Video?
As part of her media course, Katie created a music video from scratch, so how did she do it?
What was the music video for?
It was part of my media GCSE to help develop our video editing skills. The class broke off into small groups and were told to create a music video of their choice. We could choose any music we wanted and we decided on Good Charlotte - Boys and Girls.
How did you go about creating your music video?
The task was to produce a music video in a day. So first of all we developed a story board of ideas. This included where we were going to shoot our video, who was going to star in it and how it was going to be edited. We then decided who was going to star in the video, who was going to film it and who was going to edit it.
So where did you film it?
We went to a car park because we wanted a car in the shot. The lyrics talked about a car - we wanted a Ferrari but we had to settle for a Peugeot! To vary it we also shot some of it in the school canteen. We'd learnt about different camera angles in previous lessons - so we knew how to do things like long shots and high angle shots.
What part did you play?
I was starring in it and we were meant to dress as stereotypical American girls. I was meant to wear a mini skirt but it was too cold so I wore my jeans instead with a pair of sun glasses. We were also meant to wear heels but I can't walk in them so I gave up on that idea! I was also in charge of props so I had to organise some fake money for us to show in the film.
Any mishaps when filming?
We forgot to turn the camera on for some of the shots! Thankfully we had enough other shots to make up for the bit we forgot to film. We had a deadline to meet so we had to get it all filmed in the morning and then show it to the class in the afternoon.
How did you put the whole music video together?
After we'd got the shots we watched everything back and thought about where they could go in the video. We then uploaded the music to the computer and worked out where to put our four minutes of video. We used Mac video editing to put together the music video. We added footage to the lyrics and made sure we cut shots to use throughout the film. The chorus was always relatively the same shots so it would be instantly recognisable to the people watching.
How did people respond to your video?
People liked the film. Everyone did really well. One group did one about a jungle and they had cuddly monkey toy in it. Another group did it to Barbie Girl, however some of their footage was lost when it was transferred on to a CD
Do you think you'd like to do video editing as a career?
Yes I would. It was really fun and it's nice working on something and having an end product to show for it. It's very satisfying.
