Meg Cabot's interview

BBC Host Hello, and welcome to tonight's Live Chat with Meg Cabot

WOW! Here's the first question. We're off...
Mia How do you think you would have reacted if someone said you were a princess when you were 14?
Meg Cabot Oh my god I would have loved it! I would have been so happy! I would not have had the problems Mia has. I would have dealt with that by going to live in a palace! I'm nothing like the character I write about - she's a much nicer person!
Tommi H Which is your favourite of the Princess Diaries books?
Meg Cabot My favourite is book three - 'Third Time Lucky'. Once you've read it, you'll know why. I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone though - you'll have to read it to see.
Tommi H Do you prefer writing, or drawing?
Meg Cabot I like writing, I'm a much better writer then drawer because when I write the image in my head comes out much clearer then when I try and draw it. In fact, it comes out better when I write it!
Mia Is it difficult to watch someone making a film of your book? Did they interpret stuff differently to how you'd imagined it?
Meg Cabot It wasn't difficult at all - once I saw the movie, I was really pleased with it. There were differences between the book and movie however it held onto the same theme, which is you have to be true to yourself. I thought Anne Hathaway made a perfect Mia.
Anders Did you sell the film rights for all the books in the Princess series or will you be able to get more money from the next books as the film was such a success in the USA?
Meg Cabot Well Disney bought the rights to the characters, which they pay me for each time they use them. Right now they are working on Princess Diaries 2! It will not be following the books, but will be taking the same characters to new and different places.
Freda Why do you write under two names Meg Cabot and Jenny Carroll?
Meg Cabot It's like a parallel universe. I actually write under 3 names! As Patricia Cabot- I write adult fiction and as Jenny Caroll- I write paranormal stories for teenagers. That will appear on show in the UK in Jan! As they are all for different publishers, they are under different names! Jenny Caroll is the name of my dead cat - a tribute. I loved her very much!
Frank Furillo How did growing up in a small town affect your ability to write?
Meg Cabot Well there was nothing to do, so I had no choice. That was back in the days before cable and VCRs were popular, so there really was nothing to do- but write stories of our own.
Mae Do you read a lot? Do you think reading is good if you want to be a writer?
Meg Cabot I think that if you want to be a writer, you have to read! It doesn't matter what you read just read as much as possible. As a kid I read lots of comic books and it didn't seem to do me any harm. As long as you read you are training to be a writer. I read a book every two to three days! Right now I love British mysteries. My favourite writer (who is dead) was Patricia Wentworth. They are out of print in the US so I have to go to used book stores to find them.
