Web Developer

Responsible for:

Building and sometimes maintaining and hosting websites.

Salary:

£17,500 - £40,000+ a year.

Working hours:

Web developers work 37 to 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday and possibly some evenings/weekends. For self-employed web developers hours are flexible according to the job.

Qualifications:

The following qualifications are normally required: 5 GCSEs (A-C), 2 A Levels, degree. A good portfolio of experience in web design is an advantage as this may compensate for lack of formal qualifications.

General requirements:

You must enjoy working with computers, problem solving, have a good knowledge of the internet, be capable of meeting deadlines.

Career prospects:

There are many opportunities in this area. You can become a project manager, where you lead a team of developers. This involves good people management skills. You can also become a webmaster and get more involved in quality control, or you could side-step into the programming or software side and develop games or databases.
