Doctor

Responsible for:

Diagnosing illness and injuries, determining treatment programmes, surgery.

Salary:

£20,000 - 35,000 initially, then up to £65,000 (more for consultants) a year.

Working hours:

48 hours a week, lots of shift work and sometimes very long hours.

Qualifications:

Degree in medicine. It take 6 years of medical school plus 4 years to become a general A & E doctor. You specialise after your first medicine degree but there is some possibility of changing direction later but it involves more study. Some specialisms like surgery can take a further 9 years of study to qualify. You have to keep on learning as technology and knowledge advances.

General requirements:

Interest in people's well-being, strong aptitude for science and medicine, ongoing interest in learning about health science.
