Responsible for:
Stock market dealers or traders buy and sell shares on the international markets.
Salary:
Varies from £24,000 to over £100,000 a year plus annual bonus.
Working hours:
The working day is from about 7.45am to 7pm, which covers the international trading hours.
Qualifications:
Many firms only employ graduates and competition for jobs is fierce. Any degree discipline is acceptable, but a degree in economics, politics, a financial subject or other numerate subject is often preferred. Entry requirements for a degree are a minimum of two A levels/three H grades and five GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3), including English and maths, or equivalent qualifications.
General requirements:
Stock market dealers/traders need to cope under pressure and have good judgement. They should also have strong communication skills, be organised and have an aptitude for figures. The job involves calculating risks and forecasting trends so they need to inspire confidence in clients.
Career prospects:
Promotion is achieved on merit and performance. A trainee trader can progress to intermediate trader and then senior trader.
