Monkeys In The Jungle Poem

monkey family There are nine monkeys down in the Jungle,
Harry, Diana and John,
Percy and Pauline and Cloe,
Burt and Kim and of course Little Ron.

Now these nine are friends, and quite naughty,
As naughty as monkeys can be.
They throw fruit at giraffes, call hippos names for a laugh,
And drop on elephants out of the trees.

But once every year they aren’t naughty.
For one day every year they are good.
They perform a good deed for Monkeys in Need,
Which usually involves loads of food.

Now on this year that we have in question,
They couldn’t think what they should do.
Then Kim said ‘Let’s help the old monkeys,
Like Burt’s Granny and my Auntie Pru.’

‘Yes’ said Cloe ‘And my Grandad Wilfred,
And Percy’s Great Auntie Marie.’
Don’t forget my Great Uncle‘ said Pauline,
‘Do you know he’s a hundred and three?’

Then Harry suggested his Grandma,
And Diana said what about hers?
She couldn’t get out much because of her legs,
And John said his Grandad’s were worse.

Ron said his Grandpa was quite sprightly,
In fact he played golf every day.
Still if they were going to help all the old folk,
They could still help his Gramps anyway.

So that was it - all decided,
except what they actually should do.
Then Kim said ‘Let’s give 'em bananas.
It’s a nice gift.’ And Cloe said ‘True.

We’ll give each of the Old Folk bananas.
We’ll give each two bananas or three.’
‘That’s a lot of bananas’ said Percy,
‘And bananas just don’t grow on trees.’

‘Actually they do’ said young Pauline.
'What’s more in the Jungle they’re free.
Don’t just stand in the clearing, get picking.’
And with that she shot straight up a tree.

They all picked and they picked, like monkey’s possessed
Till soon lined up all in a row,
Were nine lots of three ripe bananas.
How many is that? You should know.

monkeys picking bananas

‘Twenty seven bananas’ said Pauline,
‘And I don’t know about you but I’m beat.’
Let’s all go down to MacJungles
And get ourselves something to eat.’

So off they all went for a nosh up,
All nine monkeys except Little Ron,
But because all the others were famished,
They didn’t see Ron hadn’t gone.

Now when they came back to the clearing
Alas no bananas were there.
‘It’s young Ron.’ said Harry ‘He’s nicked ‘em.’
‘No’ said Percy ‘That just isn’t fair.’

‘After all our hard work’ said Diana.
Then a monkey came out of the trees.
It was Cloe’s Grandad, Old Wilfred,
He said ‘I’d like to thank you for these..’

In his hands were three ripe bananas.
Then Burt’s Granny appeared with three more,
Which made six, but then you knew that,
Still much less than they’d had before.

Then Kim’s Auntie Pru came with three more,
Saying ‘I’d like to thank you for mine,’
Oh look, there’s already six here
And with mine that makes how many… nine.’

‘Yes’ said Harry 'but we had twenty seven.’
But just then Percy’s Great Aunt Marie
Appeared at the edge of the clearing,
Saying ‘Oh thank you so much for these three

Lovely ripe bananas,
But I can’t eat all to myself.
Oh look, you’ve already got nine.
Well, with my three, that must make twelve.’

Pauline’s Great Uncle came with his three
Making fifteen, Harry’s Grandma as well,
Another three, and so up to eighteen.
So now, as I’m sure you can tell,

They were only nine short of the total.
Diana’s Grandma came with hers too,
‘Saying thanks for the thought, this must make twenty one.’
Said Diana, 'Yes, Granny, that’s true.’

Then John’s Grandad appeared saying,
‘Hello, thanks a lot, but alack and alas,’
I couldn’t eat three whole bananas.
I’m afraid they’d just give me gas..’

Then Ron’s Grampa, Eustace, bounded up
Saying ‘Thanks, folks, for these. Where’s young Ron?’
Said Harry ‘We thought he’d nicked twenty seven bananas
But it turns out we all got it wrong.’

Ron and his family ‘You certainly did‘ said Old Eustace,
'‘Cause while you were eating today
Young Ron was delivering bananas.
Young Ron gave the bananas away.

So when Ron appeared, they all cheered him.
And now he’s a hero you see,
‘Cause he delivered twenty seven bananas
In nine lots of bunches of three.
