OVERVIEW
Starship is the BBC's brand new service to support 6-7 year old children with English and Maths skills in Year 2. The Starship TV programmes, accompanying web games, materials and radio broadcasts have all been created with the aim of making learning fun and provide plenty of opportunities for children to practise and remember things, as they prepare for their National Tests at the end of Key Stage 1.
At the start of each TV and Radio programme, the animated characters Star, Sky and Hutch will invite children on exciting trips aboard the KS1 Starship. As they travel the galaxy they will explore a range of English and Maths concepts, and learning will be reinforced with entertaining stories, poems and songs. On the Starship website you will find engaging Maths and English games and printable activities based on the topics covered.
Record and watch/listen to the TV/Radio programmes together. Encourage children to say what they know, take part in the activities and to sing along with the songs. This will enable children to practise their skills and will boost their confidence as they remember what they know.
Use the web games and print and do sheets, to support specific topics covered in the programmes, and to recap and check learning.
For more advice on how to help your child get the most from the Starship resources check out the parents notes. These provide useful tips on how to use all the Starship resources together or independently.
