Resources
1 internet-linked computer and printer to print off the activity sheets and Clue List. 1 copy of each for every 2 pupils in the class will be needed. (Optional) Access to 1 internet-linked computer so that the children can key in the 9 clues at the end of the game and be rewarded by seeing the little animation of Yasmin and Sam escaping from the maze.
Teaching Activities
Introduction:
Explain to the children that they are going to play a game which will
help them to discover ways of using their eyes, ears and brain to
spell tricky words. The game involves helping 2 children, Sam and
Yasmin, escape from a maze in which they are lost. To escape they
need the map of the maze which has been torn into 9 pieces and hidden
all over Castle Park. Each time the pupils successfully complete a
spelling activity they will be rewarded with a clue to where a piece
of the map is hidden. The pupils can write down the clues on their
Clue List as they work their way through the spelling activities which
can be completed in any order.
The printable activities cover 9 spelling
strategies; 3 largely visual, 3 auditory and articulatory and 3 cognitive.
