This website has been designed as a stand-alone, interactive resource that is easy for children to use. It offers 3 games which cover spelling strategies, rules and patterns for Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.
The three Spellits characters, Ears, Eyes and Brain, featured in the BBC television series, present the online spelling strategies and activities.
The Dramatic Context
To enhance the interactive learning experience for the children and to help motivate them to complete all the activities, the spelling challenges are presented within dramatic stories, setting up a quest or mystery. As each activity is completed the children are given a clue to add to their Clue List. When all the clues have been collected and submitted, the children are rewarded with a little animation which completes the story or solves the mystery. At the beginning of the game the children are prompted to print out a Clue List on which they can record the clues. This allows them to continue the game in more than one session.
Spellits Challenge Certificate
At the end of each game the children can print out a Spellits Challenge Certificate, proving that they have successfully completed all the activities in that game.
Dictionary
Each activity has a Dictionary function. This provides support for the children without allowing them to simply copy words across, since they must close the dictionary before returning to the activity. This ensures the children make an effort to memorise the spelling of key words.
Listening skills
In the "Escape from the Maze" Game, clicking on the Listen button allows the children to listen to the audio prompts as often as they need to when completing the activities.
