Teaching activities

Introduction
Ask children if they can remember the LAW for plants. This is Light, Air (temperature) and Water, which all plants need for growth.

Tell the children they are going to record the effect of water, temperature and light on plant growth with observations of how the plant grows.

Activities
Divide the class into three groups. Give each group a plant and a thermometer. Tell the children that each group is going to take responsibility for growing a plant over four weeks. The teacher will look after a fourth plant (the control) in the classroom. What variables should the groups change in the other three plants (light, water, temperature)? Assign each group one of these variables to test. How should they measure the light, water and temperature? Give children time to discuss with their groups how this could be done. Some suggestions could be, 1) Less light. Put plant in cupboard, keep temperature and water the same, 2) Less heat. Put plant next to open window, keep light and water the same, 3) Less water. Don't water the plant, keep temperature and light the same. What do they think will happen in each case. What does happen? Can children identify habitats where these conditions may exist e.g. in a desert?

Plenary
Children show and explain their predictions and observations with reference to colour, shape and size and reference to the main parts of the plant.

Extension

Hand children copies of the Helping plants grow well worksheet. Answer any questions children may have, and when they know what to do, let them complete the worksheet independently.

Suggested homework

Ask children to look for habitats where light, temperature and/or water affect plant growth.
