Teaching activities
Introduction
Show the plants and ask children to say what they have in common. Ask a child
to come out and touch the leaves of different plants. What is the same? What is
different? Do all plants have flowers? Where are the roots? Ask a child to come
out and draw something that will help the plants grow well (Sun, rain, watering
can).
Classwork using interactive
whiteboard
Select Growing plants from the Science Clips website. What will this plant
need to grow healthily? Ask a child to click to give the seedling water and
light. What will happen if it doesn’t get water and light? Observe what
does happen.
Click on Labels. Read through the labels. Ask different children to come out
and drag the labels to the correct places. Invite children to think of more
names for parts of plants and write in a list e.g. branch, trunk, stalk, petal,
and fruit.
Group work using a computer
for each group
Select and explain activity from the menu. Show the children how they are
responsible for providing the plant with the correct things for growth and how
to label the different plant parts. Allow groups to work through the activity,
encouraging collaborative discussion and support.
Plenary
Using interactive whiteboard, ask a pair of children to come out: one draws a
plant and the other labels it, either writing words themselves or using
prepared labels.
