Teaching activities
Introduction
Remind children of earlier work on food chains in Year 4. Show the picture
cards of pear tree leaves, caterpillar, blue tit and cat. Draw a food chain
reminding children that the arrows mean ‘is eaten by’ and
represents a transfer of energy and nutrients. Which is the producer in the
chain? Which are the consumers? Ensure children understand these terms.
Activities
Explain that in a habitat, animals and plants are interdependent (they need
each other), and that the feeding relationships between the producers and
consumers is better shown in a food web rather than a chain. Tell the children
that you are going to construct a food web for part of a pear tree habitat.
Display the following information on the interactive whiteboard: Aphid (eats
pear tree sap), Caterpillar (eats pear tree leaves), blue tit (eats pears,
caterpillars and aphids), ladybird (eats aphids). Use the information to
construct a food web with the help of the class. Identify producer, consumers,
herbivores, carnivores and predators. Which animal has no predators in this
web?
Bring up the online activity on the whiteboard. Show children how to collect a
plant or animal and how to navigate to the Sorter screens. Arrange the children
in pairs or groups, with a computer for each group. Ask children to work
through the online activity, following the tasks written (and spoken) at the
top of the screen.
Plenary
As a class on the interactive whiteboard, review the activity, collecting the
plants and animals and arranging them in the food web. The children have been
thinking about how the animals need plants and other animals for food. But you
originally used the word ‘interdependent’, which means they need
each other. How do the plants need the animals (seed dispersal)?
