Lesson Plan for Online Use
Objectives
To understand who Boudicca was.
To understand the main events of Boudicca's revolt.
National Curriculum
Key Stage 2 History 2c, 4a, 5c
Resources Notebooks, pencils, computer(s) with access to the Internet specifically
The Romans - Rebellion
Teaching Activities
    Introduction:
  • Children should already know about the Roman invasion of Britain and who lived in Britain before this happened.
  • Recap on this knowledge by asking where did the Romans come from and when did they invade?
  • Ask the class to think about how they would feel if another country invaded Britain now.
  • Brainstorm words on a board or a piece of paper such as angry, scared, worried and so on.
  • Talk about how the Celts might have felt. What might they do about it?


  • Group Activities:
  • Explain to class that during the lesson they are going to find out about an historical person called Boudicca who was unhappy with the Romans and did something about it. At the end of the lesson they will know exactly who she was and what she did.
  • Show the class a list of prepared questions - these could be printed out one per child or written on a board.

  • 1. Who was the king of the Iceni?
    2. Who was his wife?
    3. Why did she not like the Romans?
    4. Where did she march to?
    5. What did she do?

  • Show children the specific page on the Romans web site that they need to use and let them answer the questions. This could be done individually or in pairs.
  • Pupils who finish answering questions early can answer the site quiz.
  • As a class, discuss any difficult words such as Prasutagus, rebelling and Boudicca.


  • Extension Activities:
    Children write up findings as a short biography of Boudicca.
Plenary
Ask the children to think of 1 new piece of information they have discovered in this lesson.


Lesson Plan for Offline Use

Objectives
To understand where the Romans came from and what areas of the world the Romans invaded.
National Curriculum
Key Stage 2 History 2a, 2b
Resources
Printed out text and map from Romans City
Print out of Roman Maps
Copy both onto OHP paper, or enlarge onto A3 for class to see, or copy one between two.
Teaching Activities
    Introduction:
  • Children should previously have studied how different people invaded and settled in Britain. They would have briefly been introduced to the Romans as a group of people who invaded a long time ago.
  • Explain to the class that during this lesson they are going to find out some information about where the Romans came from. Set them a short task in pairs to write as many things they know about Romans onto paper or white board.
  • Explain that during the next few lessons they will find out lots more facts about the Romans.
  • Look at the printed out map.
    Explain what the purple shaded sections mean - these were the areas conquered by the Romans.
    Do the children recognise the names of places.
    Explain that these places are now called different names.
    Re-label some of these such as Hispania (Spain), Gallia (France) and Britannia (Britain).

  • Look at printed out text with class.
  • Read through and discuss any difficult words or ideas such as what a legend is or what a republic is.


  • Activities:
  • On board have a list of questions for children to answer in their history book. They will need to use the text from the web site.

  • Questions could include
    1. Who is said to have built Rome?
    2. Who were the first people to rule Rome?
    3. Who was Tarquin the Proud?
    4. What was a senator?
    5. Who was not allowed to vote in elections?
    6. Who was the first Emperor?
    7. Which Emperor made his horse a senator?

    Extension:
    Children could imagine they are a Roman Emperor. What countries would they invade and why?
Plenary
Go through the answers with the class discussing any misconceptions or difficult answers.
