The line of a coast - a coastline - is sometimes interrupted by a river flowing into the sea. This part of the coast, or the river, is called an estuary.

An estuary is where the mouth of a river broadens, or gets wider, as it flows into the sea.

Estuaries provide special environments for an enormous variety of wildlife. Often there are nature reserves and bird sanctuaries on estuaries.
