A group work based lesson that will help students to understand the statutory and voluntary organisations which support health and emotional well-being. The creative skills emphasis will help raise awareness of the voluntary role of the Samaritans organisation.

Activities for the lesson
Equipment required: ICT Internet / projector, Whiteboard, Printed handouts
Lesson starter : Picture Starter
Teacher to show the class the picture on Handout 1 - Picture starter and ask students to think about what the person is feeling, why and what can be done. Allow about three minutes for reflection.
Teacher to receive feedback from class and note comments on board.
Teacher to introduce lesson objective - to look at emotional health and well being and the different ways to access help. To look at the role of volunteers in an organisation.
Discussion about depression
Teacher to discuss health and emotional well being problems in particular depression using these statistics.
Depression At some time, 4 out of 10 adolescents have felt so miserable that they have cried and have wanted to get away from everyone and everything. During adolescence, more than 1 in 5 teenagers think so little of themselves that life does not seem worth living. In spite of these powerful feelings, depression may not be obvious to other people.
What causes depression/ suicidal feelings?
Students to work in groups and using Handout 2 - Causes of depression and their effects, they are to discuss the causes and effects of poor mental health.
Teacher to facilitate class feedback from groups and note the range of causes and the effects they may have on the individual and others. Record outcome on board.
Top tips for good Emotional Health
Students to continue working in groups and using Handout 3 - Diamond 9 - Top tips for good emotional health, students are to cut out the diamonds and place them in a diamond with the most effective tip at the top of the diamond and the least important at the bottom. Group discussion will ensue from this activity.
Teacher to receive feedback on the Diamond 9 by asking each group for their 3 top tips and the three least effective tips.

The role of volunteers
Teacher to assist students in reflecting on the role of volunteers in supporting this organisation, on a personal note have they got what it takes - skills and personal qualities? Could they be a Samaritan? Why/Why not?
Working in groups, students to design an awareness raising campaign for teenagers - poster/leaflet/advert etc... to highlight the role of Samaritans and also the need for volunteers to run the organisation. Using the information on Handout 4 - Samaritans and the role of volunteers.
Students will require A2 and A4 paper, coloured pens and pencils etc for their campaign.
Each group to present their awareness raising campaign to the class. Posters/leaflets to be displayed around school when completed.
