A practical lesson based on students developing their communication skills through role play and empathising with both a bully and a victim.
Students will gain experience in peer assessment and will understand how the bully and the victim can feel and be able to offer practical advice.
By the end of the lesson, ALL students will learn: To know that bullying is wrong and help can be obtained. All students will have had experience in peer assessing.
By the end of the lesson, MOST students should learn: To empathise with both a bully and a victim by considering how both feel through role play.
By the end of the lesson, SOME students could learn: How to assertively address a bully and begin to explain why some people become a bully.
Activities for the lesson
Equipment required: ICT Internet / projector, Whiteboard, Printed handouts
Teacher introduces the subject of bullying and the lesson objective; to understand how the bully and the victim can feel and be able to offer practical advice.
Using Handout 1 - Snowball activities, students to take part in two snowball activities.
On Snowball Bully, students to write down why a bully bullies and how he/she may feel. On Snowball Victim, students to write why the victim is bullied and how he/she may feel.
Each sheet should be passed around the class so the whole class offers an idea. The paper can be folded after each idea to make the task more difficult as students will have to try and write down something imaginative.
If the paper is not folded you could ask the students not to duplicate answers. A time limit could be given to keep the activity at a fast pace.
Students to take part in a hot seat activity. A bully will be hot seated first, then a victim. Teacher to use knowledge of their class to elect appropriate students.
Activity will promote empathy and questioning skills amongst students.
Once the activity has been completed teacher to discuss with the class the findings of the hot seat activity and the snowball activity. If there is anything interesting, something students may not have thought about before - such questions could be asked.

Scenario role play
Students to be split into 6 groups depending on class size. Using Handout 2 - Scenarios, each group is given a different scenario to act out. More able students could create their own scenario - providing it differs from the ones provided.
Scenarios - presentation to the class
Groups to act out their scenario in front of the class. It's important to stress that the students have to deal assertively with the bullying situation i.e. they cannot produce an act where someone is being bullied yet the victim does not address the situation.
Using Handout 3 - PMI diagram, students to complete a diagram for each group detailing positive, minus and interesting comments about the other groups' presentations.
Students to orally offer one piece of advice that they would give to either the bully or the victim.
