A stimulating lesson that questions the difference between a dangerous activity and a sport and the exploration of Parkour being classified as a sport.

Students will begin to understand the short and longer term consequences when making decisions about personal health and set their own criteria for an activity to be classified as a sport as preparation for a debate on the subject.

Lesson objectives

By the end of the lesson, ALL students will learn: That there are short and longer term consequences to the decisions made about the type of exercise undertaken.

By the end of the lesson, MOST students should learn: That these consequences have a positive and negative effect on not only the individual but others in the community.

By the end of the lesson, SOME students could learn: To critically analyse the consequences of partiipating in exercise on self and others.

Equipment required: ICT Internet / projector, Whiteboard, Printed handouts, Sticky notes

Teacher to introduce lesson objective - to investigate the reasons why people participate in sport/exercise and the consequences of these decisions on the individual and others around them.

Lesson starter: Think, pair, share

Ask students to list the reasons why people take part in sport.

In pairs, students are asked to share their lists and select their agreed top 5 reasons why people take part in sport.

Whole class

Teacher to facilitate a class consensus - ask pairs to feed back their top five reasons. Class discussion on the agreed 5 criteria for reasons why people participate in sport.

Using Handout 2 - Venn diagram, and working in pairs, students are to classify the sports into dangerous activities or sports.

Teacher to facilitate feedback by drawing Venn diagram on whiteboard and allowing discussion of main points.

Ending: The review

Teacher to carry out a class vote.

'This class believes that Parkour should be included as a sport.'
