A thought-provoking lesson that challenges students to think about environmental issues and whether they are willing to undertake voluntary work to help the planet.
Students are tasked creatively to produce an awareness raising campaign for voluntary environmental work.
By the end of the lesson, ALL students will learn: That there are various ways that individuals can take action to protect the environment for future generations.
By the end of the lesson, MOST students should learn: That there are various ways that individuals can take action to protect the environment for future generations, whilst at the same time gaining valuable skills and qualifications.
By the end of the lesson, SOME students could learn: To critically analyse the ways that individuals can take action to protect the environment for future generations and the benefits to the individual and to the community.
Activities for the lesson
Equipment required: ICT Internet / projector, Whiteboard, Printed handouts
Teacher to introduce the topic of sustainable living and developing a plan for sustainable living by participating in voluntary environmental work.
Lesson starter: What's your reply?
"The Government has announced that all secondary school students will be made to do a day's environmental voluntary work to benefit their community."
Teacher to write the statement on a board or to give out Handout 1 - What's your reply? and ask students to record their reply to the statement on paper.
Teacher to receive feedback on the statement from students, covering the 5 Ws - Why? When? What? Who? Where?
Working in Pairs and using Handout 2 - What can you do to help the Planet?, students are to discuss ways in which they can help the planet and ascertaining their knowledge of their local environment and their school in environmental terms.

What's the issue?
Still working in pairs, students to record information and discuss the questions posed on:
Teacher to facilitate class discussion on the video.
- How many students can identify 10 different species of tree?
- Who has the skills to build a fence?
- Is being able to identify trees and build fences a valuable skill?
- Are these skills of more value than GCSE/A levels?
- Who would prefer outdoor learning to classroom based learning?
- Who would be in favour of compulsory environmental voluntary work?
Working in pairs, students to produce a campaign. This could be a poster, leaflet, presentation, rap, poem or anything creative, to encourage young people to become involved in voluntary environmental work, highlighting the benefits to the individual, the community and the environment.
Students to present their finished results to the class.
