A tongue-in-cheek look at the role of local councils with an account of how young people engaged their local Councillors in Aberystwyth.
Students will plan their own campaign on a local issue that is pertinent to them and evaluate the strategies used to help them understand the opportunities for young people to participate in decision-making both locally and nationally.

Lesson objectives

By the end of the lesson, ALL students will learn: The role of local councils and understand how they can participate in decision-making processes that affect them.

By the end of the lesson, MOST students should learn: The role of local councils, understand and plan their participation in a decision-making process on an issue that affects them.

By the end of the lesson, SOME students could learn: To critically analyse the role of the local council and the way in which they can participate and influence a decision-making process on an issue that affects them.

Activities for the lesson

Equipment required: ICT Internet / projector, Whiteboard, Printed handouts

Lesson starter : Odd one out

Whole class

Share out Handout 1 - Odd one out and ask students to look and the three images presented and think of reasons why one picture does not fit with the others. There is no correct answer, the purpose is to develop thinking and reasoning skills.

Teacher to give a brief resume of the role of local councils, identifying the name of their local council and the councillors representing the school area.

Teacher to introduce Handout 2 - Video keywords.

Working in pairs, students are to make notes on each keyword as they watch the video - Guide to Local Councils.

Pairs to look at others each notes and aim to complete the keyword sheet using memory and recall.

Teacher to discuss notes made on the video keywords to ensure complete coverage and correct any misunderstanding. Answers could be provided on the board.

  • Why should they listen to them?
  • Who should they talk to?
  • Where would they meet them?
  • When could they talk to Councillors?

Planning a Campaign

Using Handout 3 - Planning a campaign in my area, students to work in groups of four to identify an issue that concerns them in the local community and devise an action plan to raise awareness of the problem and engage the local Councillors in an original and exciting way.

Each group will prepare a presentation of their issue and campaign proposals to the class.
