Mandarin is the official language of China, but China is not the only place in the world where people speak Mandarin.

Some people in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia also speak Mandarin.

xīn jiā pō / 新加坡 - Singapore

mǎ lái xī yà / 马来西亚 - Malaysia

yìn dù ní xī yà / 印度尼西亚 - Indonesia

One of the reasons people in these countries speak Mandarin is because a lot of Chinese people live there.

Did you notice that these countries are pronounced similarly in English and in Mandarin?

wǒ huì shuō pǔ tōng huà / 我会说普通话 - I can speak Mandarin.

wǒ huì shuō yī diǎn ér pǔ tōng huà / 我会说一点儿普通话 - I can speak a little bit of Mandarin.
