dans le désert - in the desert
dans la savane - in the savannah
dans la mer - in the sea
dans la jungle - in the jungle
dans une rivière - in a river
dans les bois - in the woods
dans une vallée - in a valley
dans un lac - in a lake
All these places use dans but some places use a different word – à:
à la montagne - on the mountain
J’habite à la montagne. - I live on the mountain.
Montagne is a FEMININE noun, so you just put the à before the la eg j’habite à la montagne. However, if the noun is masculine, the à and the le are ‘squashed’ to make au:
au bord du lac - beside a lake
