Months

Please note: There is a short delay when playing the audio clips.

There are douze mois (12 months) in une année (a year) in French, just like in English. However just as with the days of the week, the months don’t start with a capital letter.

un mois - a month

une année - a year

When you look at the months of the year in French you can probably guess what they mean as many are very similar to English.

janvier - January

février - February

mars - March

avril - April

mai - May

juin - June

juillet - July

août - August

Did you notice some similarities? April – avril; May – mai; June – juin?

The last four months of the year all end –ber in English. Look at the French and see what you notice:

septembre - September

octobre - October

novembre - November

décembre - December

That's right! The –ber ending in English becomes –bre in French.

To say something happens in un mois (a month), you use the word en.

en - in

Mon anniversaire est en octobre. - My birthday is in October.

Je vais en vacances en juillet. - I go on holiday in July.
