Numbers 13 - 21
Teaching objectives:
Children will learn the numbers from thirteen to twenty-one.
New language content:
treize - thirteen
quatorze - fourteen
quinze - fifteen
seize - sixteen
dix-sept - seventeen
dix-huit - eighteen
dix-neuf - nineteen
vingt - twenty
vingt et un - twenty-one
Previous knowledge:
This section builds on numbers to twelve.
Notes:
- Children can be shown the lexical links between the numbers, e.g. sept - dix-sept.
- Numbers can be compared in English, French and other languages.
- The arabic roots of numbers can be investigated.
- Children in France also like to build up collections of items (see En France, collecting football cards): this could be compared to the latest collecting craze in Britain.
Reinforcement:
- Start maths lessons with quick warm-up activities in French, e.g. Comptez comme ça - you count in a variety of ways, the children joining in when they have worked out what you are doing, e.g. count up to twenty then down, in twos or threes.
Printable stuff:
- Ensure that children are familiar with the text form of the numbers before attempting this worksheet. The numbers, with matching text, should be provided as a reference, either clearly displayed in the room, or on individual sheets for each child.
Extension:
- Use the numbers in Mental Maths and in more complex Maths, such as the Fifteen Number Square (where all the lines add up to fifteen).
