Holiday time!

Teaching objectives:

Children will learn some countries; the points of the compass; to say where they are going; to answer the question Where are you going?

New language content:

Où vas-tu, en vacances? - Where are you going on holiday?
Je vais en Espagne - I'm going to Spain
Je vais au Pays de Galles - I'm going to Wales
Je vais en France - I'm going to France
dans l'est - in the East
dans le nord - in the North
dans l'ouest - in the West
dans le sud - in the South

Previous Knowledge:

This section reinforces the first person pronoun je, and previously learned conversational language in both spoken and written form.

Notes:
  • To say 'in' or 'to' use à + town, but en + country, e.g. J'habite à Manchester, en Angleterre. There are notable exceptions, e.g. au Pays de Galles [in/to Wales]; aux Etats-Unis [in/to the United States].
  • Where a liaison should, correctly, be heard between two words (because the second word begins with a vowel), in colloquial speech it may often be omitted and the two words heard separately, e.g. je vais_en Italie OR je vais en Italie.
Reinforcement:
  • Yes/No [Vrai/Faux] game: Provide cards of the countries, represented by symbols, props or text cards (these could be written on map outlines of each country). A volunteer holding a suitcase or rucksack picks a country, concealing it behind the suitcase: the class call Où vas-tu, en vacances? and the volunteer answers, e.g. Je vais en Espagne. The class must guess correctly if the truth has been told, in order for the turn to pass to another child. Progress to playing in pairs and adding other countries if you wish.
  • Puppet conversation practice to revise all previously learned conversational language: incorporate saying which part of the country people live in, e.g. J'habite [à Liverpool], dans le nord-ouest de l'Angleterre. Create imaginative contexts, e.g. a train in France.
  • Children create conversations about holiday destinations by adapting the En France script to suit individual needs.
  • Dans: practise using this preposition with games, such as guessing the classroom items in a bag. You could progress to children replacing items in the bag in the order you have produced them, e.g. Dans mon sac j'ai.....
Printable Stuff - Le Grand Quiz board game, speaking and reading (2 sheets):
  • To prepare for this activity revise the questions and answers through puppet conversation practice; play favourite games to practise the language and to familiarise the children thoroughly with the text version of the language.
Extension:
  • Introduce more prepositions, such as sur, sous, etc. and reinforce them in games or the classroom context, e.g. when giving instructions to tidy items away.
  • Compare linguistically the names of the European countries in French and English.
  • Use the compass points to discuss where towns are situated in France and the UK, and where countries are placed on the map of Europe.
  • Combine with language from How's the weather? to create weather maps for Europe.
  • Write and decorate holiday postcards from different countries, e.g. Il fait chaud en France, j'aime les boules, c'est super en France! You will need to provide a supporting framework of phrases, and a few new words, as necessary.
  • On fait la fête: Have a party to celebrate le quatorze juillet, including activities such as a boules tournament, traditional dancing (see How's the weather?: opening cartoon) rap competition, postcard writing (above), French café, etc.
