My family

Teaching objectives:

Children will learn the names of family members; they will answer the question Have you any brothers or sisters? and understand other people answering the question.

New language content:

Voici une photo de ma famille - Here is a photo of my family
Voici ma grand-mère - my grandmother
Voici mon grand-père - my grandfather
Voici mes cousins - my cousins
Tu as des frères? - Have you any brothers
Je n'ai pas de frère - I haven't got a brother
Tu as des soeurs - Have you any sisters?
J'ai un frère, j'ai une soeur - I have one brother, I have one sister

Previous Knowledge:

This section incorporates previously learned conversational language.

Notes:
  • The words for father [le père] and mother [la mère] are included in the words for grandfather and grandmother but otherwise are not featured in this section: when children practise saying I have / I have not, it is better to concentrate on brothers and sisters. You can provide the words Papa or Maman when necessary, e.g. when writing Christmas or Mothering Sunday cards.
  • To say I haven't a/any.. use the negative construction ne...pas, with de, e.g. Je n'ai pas de frère.
  • En France introduces the weather: once you have established the date as a routine you may wish to introduce the weather gradually, using only one or two phrases, e.g. il fait mauvais [it's bad weather] / il fait beau [it's fine weather]. You could gradually add phrases as you need them, e.g. il pleut [it's raining].
Reinforcement:
  • Children could create imaginary families or bring photos of their families to school (or draw them), and present them to the class. You may need to help them say Here is my brother/sister - voici mon frère; voici ma soeur. You could include ...qui s'appelle, e.g. Voici ma soeur qui s'appelle Claire.
  • Circle activity: children pass round a soft toy, answering the question Tu as des frères? and then passing it on. Repeat the activity with Tu as des soeurs?
  • Progress to puppet conversation practice.
  • Yes/No [Vrai/Faux] game: Provide a set of cards containing pictures of different numbers of brothers and sisters. A volunteer stands at the front of the class and picks a card, hiding it from the class, who then put the question - Tu as des frères (et des soeurs?) The child answers, e.g. J'ai deux frères (et trois soeurs). The class must decide if the truth has been told: if they guess correctly the turn passes to another child.
Printable Stuff
  • Vrai ou Faux (Menteur!) card game: Children can be prepared for the game by first seeing it played, in the En France section.
  • Encourage the children to say the card they hold using J'ai, e.g. J'ai deux frères
  • .
  • The 'cards' can subsequently be used as cue cards, for creating role-plays about imaginary families.
Extension:
  • Children prepare their own family trees [Mon arbre généalogique]: they may be encouraged to use the bilingual dictionary to look up the words for other family members.
  • Combine the new vocabulary with colours to create imaginary monster families, e.g. Voici la famille Rouge: voici Monsieur Rouge, le père... etc.
  • Introduce the use of the third person in conversation, e.g. Il s'appelle Roller / Elle s'appelle Mimi.
