Lesson Plan for Online Use
Objective
To describe the various physical states of water and how these states affect the properties of water; how the state is affected by temperature.
National Curriculum
Key Stage 2 Science: Sc3 2b, 2c & 2d
Resources
Teaching Activities:
Introduction
- "Visit Annie's area in the Solids & Liquids topic on the Pod's Mission website
Group Activities
Discuss: What the different states of matter are and ask the children what they think the differences are: what sort of properties do solids, liquids and gasses have? Let them work in groups to think up some examples of common solids, liquids and gases that they know of in their daily life. Try to get them to think of five of each.
Encourage them to record the group's ideas on Worksheet 2. This could be used to encourage the class to think of some similarities between the properties of solids, liquids and gasses. As a class, work towards some agreed definitions of what solids, liquids and gasses are, and some of the exceptions.
Look at some examples of substances the class have come up with and encourage them to think if they know of any of these substances in a different state. Whatever temperature the substances are at when they are in different states, elicit from the class which state is warmest: solid, liquid or gas, and which is coldest.
Introduce water as a special substance that exists in all three states in a relatively short temperature range. Ask what these states are called.
Individual/Small Group
Let them play the Hotter or Colder? game and ask them to record the temperatures of each state on pencil and paper, when they have guessed them correctly.
Homework
Ask the children to plot their temperatures from the Hotter or Colder? game on a bar chart, showing the different temperatures of water at various states.
