Substances have different properties depending on whether they are solid or liquid.
In general, solids have a fixed volume and a fixed shape. Liquids have a fixed volume, but not a fixed shape. Think about the difference between what happens if you put water and an ice cube in a container:

Some solids will dissolve in some liquids, e.g. salt in water. Sometimes when a solid dissolves in a liquid it will look like it has disappeared, but it is still there, just in very small particles, too small to see.
