Number: Whole Numbers and Decimals - offline version

Objectives:

  • In solving number problems, pupils use a range of mental methods of computation with the four operations ......quick derivation of corresponding division facts.

  • Pupils apply inverse operations.

National Curriculum:

  • AT2 level 4, level 5

Resources required:

Teaching activities:

Mental Starter

  • Mental recall of multiplication facts up to 10 × 10.


  • Number bonds to 100.


  • "I will give you a number, tell me how much more I need to get to 100?" 63, 28, 105

Activities

  • Give the Whole Numbers worksheet out.

  • The pupils should read through the first example and the teacher could discuss the links with them.

  • The pupils complete the first exercise.

  • The pupils read through the second example and the teacher discusses the links.

  • The pupils complete the second exercise.

Extension

  • A good extension would be to introduce:
    "If 32 × 21 = 672, what is 3.2 × 21?"

  • This could then lead on to questions such as:
    "If 27 × 31 = 837, what is 83.7 ÷ 31?"

Plenary

  • Lots of quick fire questions on the topic.

Suggested homework:

  • Teacher-prepared worksheet with number-bond and decimal addition, multiplication and division problems.
