Shakespeare: Macbeth - Writing Task - offline version

Objectives:

All will have some understanding of the kinds of information advertisements use. Most will have a grasp of the style and language used. Some will be able to write an effective advertisement.

National Curriculum:

En3: 1e, 1g, 1j, 1k, 2a, 7a, 7c, 7d
En2: 4a, 4b, 4d

Resources required:

  • Lots of examples of adverts for castles/ historical buildings as tourist attractions. These can be found in colour supplements and downloaded from the internet.

Teaching Activities:

Introduction

Starter activity on imperatives: teacher outlines that they will be working towards writing a leaflet for a tourist attraction. Write a selection of imperatives on the board which might be used in such a text, and ask students to put them into appropriate sentences.

Activities

  1. Students form small groups and make notes on the type of information given in a sample of adverts.


  2. Feedback. Teacher to write findings on the board, or to have prepared an OHP beforehand.

    Q: Ask what kind of information is usually present in the first sentence.


  3. Students complete the Writing Task worksheet.


  4. Class feedback on the adjectives they have selected to make Dunsinane Castle sound appealing.


  5. Examine the headlines of the sample adverts.

    Q: Ask what kind of language they use.


  6. Class write their advert individually. This may be done as a homework.

Suggested homework:

  • Imagine you are trying to promote Dunsinane Castle as a tourist attraction. Write a leaflet persuading people to visit.
