About the tests

What about the English SATs?

The English SATs test you on two different skills: READING and WRITING. Your Teacher Assessed level will be based on your achievements in Reading, Writing AND Speaking and Listening.

English is different from Maths and Science because everyone sits the SAME level (4-7) instead of having different papers for each level.

The English test is divided into THREE parts: the Reading Test, the Writing Test and the Shakespeare Test. The Reading Test involves answering questions based on three texts you probably won’t have seen before. The Writing Test requires you to write for a particular audience and purpose. The Shakespeare Test is based on two extracts from a play by William Shakespeare, which you will study during Year 9.

How do I revise for English?

Well, you can certainly revise for the Shakespeare section, and the Shakespeare section of this website will help you with that. But you’re right; you can’t exactly revise for the Reading and Writing tests. What you can do, though, is PRACTISE. Improving your reading and writing skills is just like learning to cook, ride a bike, use a computer or learn a sport. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! That's what the Revision and Test Bites on Reading and Writing will help you to do.
