1. Beth ydy dy enw di a faint ydy dy oed di? - What's your name and how old are you?

  • Elin ydw i a dw i’n un deg chwech oed. Dw i ym Mlwyddyn un ar ddeg.

  • I'm Elin and I'm 16. I'm in Year 11.

Morgan says:

  • Morgan ydy fy enw i a dw i’n un deg chwech oed. Bydda i’n un deg saith ym mis Medi a bydda i’n dechrau dysgu gyrru. Alla i ddim aros!

  • My name's Morgan and I'm 16. I'll be 17 in September and I'll start learning to drive. I can't wait!
  • Elin has used simple sentences to answer the question, whereas Morgan has answered the question but has chosen to give further information about his age. He has used the present and future tenses and expressed his opinion.

2. Ble wyt ti’n byw? - Where do you live?

  • I live in Pontypridd in south east Wales. Pontypridd is a large, historical town between Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff - the capital of Wales. I love living in the area because the theatre holds shows throughout the year and of course Pontypridd is convenient for the M4. Last Saturday I had a whale of a time because a group of friends went climbing in Brecon, and next weekend we're going to see a musical at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.
  • Elin has answered using only one tense, simple sentence patterns and has given a simple reason to conclude her opinion. Morgan on the other hand gives a far more detailed answer with extended sentences and opinions and uses third person sentence patterns when talking about other people. He has ensured that he has used the present, past and future tenses. He has used the idiomatic phrases diwrnod i’r brenin and dw i wrth fy modd.

3. Beth ydy dy hobïau di? - What are your hobbies?

  • Fy hobïau ydy canu a dawnsio. Dw i’n dawnsio bob nos Iau gyda fy ffrindiau yn y ganolfan ddawns. Dw i’n hoffi canu yn y bath a weithiau dw i’n canu karaoke ar wyliau!

  • My hobbies are singing and dancing. I dance every Thursday night with my friends in the dance centre. I like singing in the bath and sometimes I sing karaoke on holiday!

Morgan says:

  • Yn fy amser hamdden, dw i’n dwli ar fynd gyda fy ffrindiau gorau i ddringo yn y ganolfan ddringo leol achos mae’n fy helpu i gadw’n heini.   • Elin has answered using the same sentence pattern, giving simple facts and has used only the present tense. Morgan has given reasons to support his statements and a variety of sentence patterns and tenses. He has also used the idiomatic phrase ar y llaw arall.

4. Disgrifia dy wallt a dy lygaid. - Describe your hair and your eyes.

  • I've got fairly long dark hair and I've got brown eyes. Mum says that my hair is messy all the time - like a haystack! Mum thinks I should have short hair but I like this style because I'm a member of a rock group and I love this image. From time to time at school I have to wear glasses to see the interactive whiteboard.
  • Elin has used simple sentence patterns with little variation. She has used the negative form. Morgan has described in detail his style and image giving good reasons to support his statements. He has used a few good idiomatic phrases - dwli ar and o bryd i’w gilydd - to make his work more interesting and has included a variety of interesting sentence patterns.

5. Pa fath o berson wyt ti? - What kind of person are you?

  • Dw i’n eitha tawel a gweithgar yn yr ysgol ond dw i’n siaradus iawn yn y tŷ. Weithiau dw i’n gallu bod yn flêr yn y tŷ.

  • I'm quite quiet and hardworking at school but I'm very chatty in the house. Sometimes I can be untidy in the house.

Morgan says:

  • Yn fy marn i, dw i’n hoffus a chyfeillgar achos mae llawer o ffrindiau gyda fi. A dweud y gwir dw i’n dipyn o dderyn gyda’r merched a weithiau dw i’n gallu bod fel clown gyda’r bechgyn rygbi.   • In my opinion, I'm likeable and friendly because I've got a lot of friends. To be honest I'm a bit of a flirt with the girls and sometimes I can be like a clown with the rugby boys. My mum thinks that I'm very extroverted - exactly like my dad! On the whole, I'm conscientious and hardworking at school because I'd like to get good results in order to go to university to be a doctor in the future.
  • Elin has used only the present tense in simple sentences and she has used a selection of adjectives. Morgan has used extended sentences and opinions with a selection of idiomatic phrases to support his statements together with a variety of tenses.

6. Sawl person sydd yn dy deulu di? - How many people are in your family?

  • There are five people in my family. I've got one brother, Wil and one sister, Carys. My mum's name is Catrin and my dad's name is Gerwyn.

Morgan says:

  • Mae pump person yn fy nheulu i – fy nhad, fy mam, fy llys-dad, fi a fy efaill Meredydd. Rydyn ni’n deulu hapus iawn a mae fy efaill a fi yn agos iawn wrth gwrs. Rydyn ni’n gwneud popeth gyda’n gilydd. Plismon yng Nghaerdydd ydy fy nhad a mae fy mam yn gweithio mewn swyddfa bost leol. Athro ydy fy llys-dad.   • There are five people in my family - my dad, my mum, my step-dad, me and my twin Meredydd. We're a very happy family and my twin and I are very close of course. We do everything together. My dad's a policeman in Cardiff and my mum works in a local post office. My step-dad's a teacher. Meredydd wants to be a policeman like dad in the future because he likes helping people.
  • Elin has answered by giving only short, direct answers in the present tense. Morgan, on the other hand, has used a variety of sentence patterns and has used third person and plural verb forms. He has also used different tenses.
