1. Wyt ti'n hoffi siopa? - Do you enjoy shopping?

Elin says:

  • Dw i’n hoffi siopa achos dw i’n hoffi dillad. Dw i’n mwynhau mynd i siopa ar y penwythnos efo fy ffrindiau ond dydw i ddim yn hoffi siopau prysur.

  • I like shopping because I like clothes. I enjoy going shopping at the weekend with friends but I don't like busy shops.

Morgan says:

  • Dw i’n dwli ar siopa. Dw i’n byw ym Mhontypridd a mae siopau da yma. Dw i’n dwli ar brynu dillad ffasiynol ond dydw i ddim yn hoffi dillad hen ffasiwn. Yn fy marn i, mae’n bwysig dilyn y ffasiwn. Dros y penwythnos, es i i’r ganolfan siopa yn y dref a phrynais i grys-T gwyn, jîns glas tywyll a siwmper. Gwariais i bedwar deg punt.

  • I love shopping. I live in Swansea and there are good shops here. I love buying fashionable clothes but I don't like old-fashioned clothes. In my opinion, it's important to follow the fashion. At the weekend, I went to the shopping centre in town and I bought a white T-shirt, dark blue jeans and a jumper. I spent £40.
  • Elin chooses to answer using easy words and simple constructions. Morgan answers the question in more detail. He also uses the opportunity to give more complex opinions and he uses the past tense to describe a time he went shopping.

2. Ble wyt ti'n siopa? - Where do you go shopping?

Elin says:

  • Dw i’n hoffi siopa yn y ganolfan siopa. Dydw i ddim yn hoffi prynu dillad o gatalog a dydw i ddim yn mwynhau siopa mewn siopau elusen.

  • I like shopping in the shopping centre. I don't like buying clothes from a catalogue and I don't enjoy shopping in charity shops.

Morgan says:

  • Dw i’n hoffi mynd i’r dref i siopa achos mae siopau mawr yno a mae dewis da. Fy hoff siopau ydy siopau chwaraeon achos dw i’n meddwl bod dillad chwaraeon fel tracwisg yn gyfforddus. Hefyd, dw i’n prynu dillad yn y farchnad weithiau achos maen nhw’n rhad a dw i’n dwli ar gael bargen. Hoffwn i fynd i’r dref ddydd Sadwrn nesa achos dw i eisiau prynu jîns newydd. Sôn am gyffrous!

  • I like going into town to shop because there are big shops there and a good choice. My favourite shops are sports shops because I think that sports clothes like a tracksuit are comfortable. Also, I buy clothes in the market sometimes because they're cheap and I love getting a bargain. I'd like to go to town next Saturday because I want to buy new jeans. Talk about exciting!
  • Elin has used simple sentences to answer the question, saying where she does and doesn’t like shopping. On the other hand, Morgan has given much more information. He has used more complex structures and he has given full reasons for his opinions. He has used more than one tense and he finishes his answer with an idiomatic phrase.

3. Faint wyt ti'n gwario ar ddillad? - How much do you spend on clothes?

Elin says:

  • Dw i’n gwario dau ddeg punt y mis ar ddillad. Dw i’n hoffi prynu dillad ffasiynol a dw i’n gweithio mewn siop bob dydd Sadwrn i gael arian.

  • I spend £20 a month on clothes. I like buying fashionable clothes and I work in a shop every Saturday to get money.

Morgan says:

  • Dydw i ddim yn gwario llawer ar ddillad achos dydw i ddim yn gweithio bob dydd, ac felly does dim llawer o arian gyda fi. Mae Mam yn prynu dillad i fi pan dw i eisiau rhywbeth newydd. Fis diwethaf, ces i arian gan fy nheulu ar fy mhen-blwydd felly roedd arian gyda fi i wario ar ddillad newydd. Es i i’r ganolfan siopau a phrynais i siwmper streipiau newydd.   • I don't spend a lot on clothes because I don't work every day, and so I don't have much money. Mum buys clothes for me when I want something new. Last month, I got money from my family on my birthday so I had money to spend on new clothes. I went to the shopping centre and I bought a new, stripey jumper. It's very fashionable and I love stripes. My friends like my jumper too.
  • Elin chooses to answer using one sentence pattern. Morgan answers the question in much more detail. He talks about other people and therefore uses the third person. He describes what he bought using the past tense and he uses the idiomatic phrase dw i'n dwli ar. In north Wales, you could say dw i wrth fy modd efo. He also gives opinions with reasons to support them.

4. Efo pwy wyt ti'n mynd i siopa? (NW)/Gyda pwy wyt ti'n mynd i siopa? (SW) - Who do you go shopping with?

Elin says:

  • Dw i’n mynd i siopa efo fy ffrindiau bob penwythnos. Mae’n hwyl. Dydw i ddim yn hoffi mynd i siopa efo mam achos mae hi’n ddiflas.

  • I go shopping with my friends every weekend. It's fun. I don't like going shopping with mum because she's boring.

Morgan says:

  • Fel arfer, dw i’n mynd i siopa gyda fy ffrindiau ar y penwythnos. Rydyn ni’n mynd i’r dref i’r siopau mawr ond weithiau rydyn ni’n mynd i’r ganolfan siopa tu allan i’r dref. Rydyn ni’n cael llawer o hwyl achos mae fy ffrindiau’n ddoniol iawn. Mae’n gas gyda fi fynd i siopa gyda mam achos mae hi’n hen ffasiwn. Ond weithiau, mae’n rhaid i fi fynd gyda mam achos hi sy’n talu am y dillad.

  • Usually, I go shopping with my friends at the weekend. We go to town to the big shops but sometimes we go to the shopping centre outside town. We have a lot of fun because my friends are very funny. I hate going shopping with mum because she's old-fashioned. But sometimes, I have to go with mum because she's the one who pays for the clothes.
  • Elin has used simple sentences and given simple reasons for her opinions. Morgan has gone into a lot more detail and has given full reasons for his opinions. He has used the plural verb form rydyn ni and has used very good link words like fel arfer and weithiau. He has also used a new structure rhaid i fi which is excellent.

5. Wyt ti'n berson ffasiynol? - Are you a fashionable person?

  • Dw i’n berson ffasiynol iawn. Dw i’n prynu dillad efo label. Dydw i ddim yn prynu dillad hen ffasiwn.

  • I'm a very fashionable person. I buy clothes with a label. I don't buy old-fashioned clothes.

Morgan says:

  • Ydw, dw i’n berson ffasiynol. Dydy fy mrawd i ddim yn berson ffasiynol. Mae e’n dweud dydy dilyn y ffasiwn ddim yn bwysig. Mae’n well gyda fe wisgo dillad cyfforddus na dillad ffasiynol. Does dim arian gyda fi i brynu dillad ffasiynol, felly dw i'n prynu dillad o siopau'r stryd fawr, achos dydyn nhw ddim yn rhy ddrud.

  • Yes, I'm a fashionable person. My brother isn't a fashionable person. He says that following fashion is not important. He prefers to wear comfortable clothes than fashionable clothes. I don't have money to buy fashionable clothes, so I buy clothes from the high street shops.
  • Elin has answered the question clearly but simply. Morgan has used complex sentences and has supported these with detailed opinions. He has used negative structures to help convey his viewpoint more clearly.

6. Pa fath o ddillad wyt ti'n hoffi? - What type of clothes do you like?

  • Dw i’n hoffi dillad ffasiynol fel jîns sgini. Dydw i ddim yn hoffi dillad chwaraeon a dw i’n casáu gwisgo tracwisg.
  • I like fashionable clothes like skinny jeans. I don't like sports clothes and I hate wearing a tracksuit.

Morgan says:

  • Fy hoff ddillad ydy dillad chwaraeon. Dw i’n gwisgo dillad chwaraeon bob dydd achos maen nhw’n gyfforddus a maen nhw’n edrych yn dda.   • My favourite clothes are sports clothes. I wear sports clothes every day because they're comfortable and they look good. Also, I like to wear a T-shirt and jeans because they're fashionable. I hate wearing school uniform because it's old-fashioned. I hate wearing a tie - talk about old-fashioned! I prefer wearing fashionable clothes than school uniform.
  • Elin has given a short answer, simply what she likes and doesn’t like to wear. On the other hand, Morgan has gone into much more detail. He has used a variety of structures and has supported all his opinions with reasons. He has also used the idiomatic phrase sôn am to give more colour to his answer.
