Spanish newspapers are a good source of information and news items often crop up in exams.

Questions and Answers

Here is a typical newspaper article. Don't worry if you don't understand some of the words.

Miércoles 23 de agosto

Ayer por la tarde, en el parque de atracciones de Málaga, un chico de trece años resultó gravemente herido en un accidente en una de las atracciones más populares del parque.

El incidente ocurrió en la montaña rusa, que en ese momento iba cargada de pasajeros.

Parece que el tren viajaba a gran velocidad, el chico resbaló de su asiento y se dió con la pierna en la estructura metálica.

El chico fue trasladado inmediatamante al hospital en helicóptero, donde según los médicos se encuentra en estado muy grave.

Este accidente asustó a las personas que se divertían en el parque de atracciones y un poco más tarde muchos decidieron volver a casa.

En una entrevista en la radio hoy por la mañana, el propietario ha dicho que el accidente debe de haber sido ocasionado por una imprudencia del chico.

Read through it again and then work out whether these statements are true (verdad) or false (falso).

  1. Falso - If the article is dated Wednesday and says that the accident happened the day before, then it must have happened on Tuesday.
  2. Verdad - The two expressions offer most of the same information.
  3. Verdad - Although the statement and the article use very different words, they actually mean the same thing.
  4. Falso - Careful! Although the two sentences use very similar language, one says that the people went home after the accident and the other that they went home before it.
  5. Verdad - Although the wording is different, both the article and the statement say that the interview happened on the day after the accident.
