Why bother with small ads? Two reasons - if you understand them, you may find you get a bargain, and they are also great favourites in exams.

Questions and Answers

This exercise takes you through what you need to understand them and gives you the chance to tackle a typical exam question.

Understanding small ads isn't really difficult. Just remember that people are trying to say what they need to in as few words as possible.

Some young people are advertising for part-time jobs. You are asked to read the ads and then choose the correct word in each of the sentences about them.

Answer
  1. Belén quiere dar clases de francés e inglés.
    • Don't be fooled by the fact that the subjects are mentioned in a different order.
  2. Alfonso puede trabajar por la mañana.
    • If you look at the times mentioned you can see that they must refer to the morning. Don't forget that Spanish people tend to have their lunch later.
  3. Rosa quiere trabajar con niños.
    • Rosa calls herself a chica but she actually says she wants to look after children (niños).
  4. Rodrigo quiere trabajar seis horas al día.
    • To get the correct answer you have to work out how many hours there are between six o'clock and 12 o'clock.
  5. Rodrigo quiere trabajar en un restaurante.
    • If Rodrigo is a waiter (camarero) the answer must be a restaurant.
  6. Raúl puede trabajar los domingos.
    • Raúl wants to work at weekends and Sunday is the only weekend day mentioned here.
