Motivation and arousal (AQA students only)

Sportspeople have to want to perform and to improve their performance. Determination to do this is called motivation. The level of motivation is called arousal.

Motivation can be:

  • Intrinsic – coming from your own feelings.
  • Extrinsic – coming from external rewards (money, prizes) or pressure.

Arousal levels are linked to personality. Coaches need to know their performers and plan training and feedback to suit their personalities.

Extroverts prefer team sports

Extroverts are socially outgoing. They need high arousal levels to perform. Coaches and team mates need to keep them 'excited' about performing.

Introverts are usually shy. They perform better at lower arousal levels. Coaches and team mates need to allow them to stay calm and focused. Too much stimulation will cause them to be over-aroused and they will not perform well.
