In the listening exam you'll be asked to translate sound into notation [Notation: A visual or written representation of music. ]. You will have to write down a simple melody in a major key and/or complete the notation of a simple instrumental or vocal excerpt in a major key.

Rhythmic transcription

In a rhythmic transcription exercise you'll often be given an incomplete score [Score: A written representation of music that displays parts for all players of a piece. ] and asked to complete the rhythm using the given pitch.

So make sure you know your rhythmic notation:

Rhythmic notation

semibreve

Remember

  • Look at the time signature [Time Signature: A symbol at the start of a piece, or sometimes at other intervals, that indicates the number of beats in a bar. ]. Adding up the beats incorrectly will lose you marks!
  • Look out for repetition.
  • Look at how many marks are allocated (each correct beat will get you one mark).
