1. An bhfuil post páirtaimseartha agat? Do you have a part-time job?

Although Caitríona

and Seán have given more or less the same information, Seán has used better structures and he will be given more marks for this effort.

2. Cad chuige an maith leat an post? Why do you like the job?

Caitríona has given three pieces of information

whereas Seán has given four pieces. Seán's answers display a higher level of language and his vocabulary is much better than Caitriona's.

3.Cad é mar atá an pá? How is the pay?

Caitríona's answer is very brief.

Seán has used some nice phrases and constructions in his answer. He has used precise vocabulary relating to work. Sean's answer is also extended and contains more information.

4. Cad é a dhéanann tú leis an phá? What do you do with the pay?

Caitríona's answer is very brief here.

Seán on the other hand has included what he buys and why he buys it. He has extended his answer in this way. He has also used better phrases and more vocabulary.

5.Cad é a dhéanann tú? What do you do?

Caitríona has used the same verb three times and this appears to show that she has a limited vocabulary.

Seán has given a more extended answer and he has used verbs and other vocabulary associated with work.

Although Caitríona has made some effort to extend her answer it lacks the depth of answer given by Seán. Seán's answer is extended and he has shown the examiner that he can use certain grammatical structures correctly.

6. Ar mhaith leat an post seo a dhéanamh go lánaimseartha? Would you like to do this job full-time?

Caitríona answers as briefly as possible and gives only one reason for her choice.

Seán answers at length, showing the examiner that he can use a range of grammatical constructions and vocabulary.

Transcript and translation

1.An bhfuil post páirtaimseartha agat? Do you have a part-time job?

Caitríona says:

Tá post páirtaimseartha agam. Bím ag obair i siopa. Is maith liom an post.

I have a part-time job. I work in a shop. I like the job.

Seán says:

Boy

Tá post páirtaimseartha agam. Oibrím i siopa glasraí i lár an bhaile. Caithfidh mé a rá go dtaitníonn an post liom.

I have a part-time job. I work in a vegetable shop in the middle of the town. I have to say I like the job.

2.Cad chuige an maith leat an post? Why do you like the job?

Caitríona says:

Tá sé suimiúil agus tá an chraic go maith. Is maith liom an t-airgead.

It's interesting and the craic's good. I like the money.

Seán says:

Boy

Sílim go bhfuil an post suimiúil agus is maith liom pá a shaothrú. Is breá liom bheith neamhspleách ar mo thuismitheoirí. Bíonn mo chuid airgid féin agam.

I think the job's interesting and I like to earn pay. I love being independent of my parents. I have my own money.

3. Cad é mar atá an pá? How is the pay?

Caitríona says:

Tá an pá ceart go leor. Faighim trí phunt san uair.

The pay's alright. I get £3 an hour.

Seán says:

Boy

Níl an pá thar mholadh beirte. Ní shaothraím ach dhá phunt caoga in aghaidh na huaire. Ba mhaith liom níos mó pá a shaothrú mar bíonn a lán airgid de dhíth orm.

The pay's not great. I only earn £2.50 an hour. I would like to earn more pay as I need a lot of money.

4. Cad é a dhéanann tú leis an phá? What do you do with the pay?

Caitríona says:

Ceannaím dlúthdhioscaí, éadaí agus irisí leis an airgead.

I buy CDs, clothes and magazines with the money.

Seán says:

Boy

Ceannaím dlúthdhioscaí mar ta an-suim agam sa cheol. Ceannaím éadaí mar is maith liom bheith faiseanta agus téim chuig an dioscó le mo chairde ag an deireadh seachtaine fosta. Ó am go ham cuirim cúpla punt i dtaisce do mo laethanta saoire.

I buy CDs because I'm really interested in music. I buy clothes because I like to be fashionable and I also go to the disco with my friends at the weekend. From time to time I save a couple of pounds for my holidays.

5. Cad é a dhéanann tú ? What do you do?

Caitríona says:

Glanaim an t-urlár agus glanaim na tablaí. Glanaim na fuinneoga ó am go ham fosta.

I clean the floor and I clean the tables. I also clean the windows from time to time.

Seán says:

Boy

Osclaím an siopa ó am go ham agus druidim an siopa fosta. Nuair a bhím ag obair freastalaím ar na cutaiméirí agus díolaim na glasraí. Ó am go ham glanaim an siopa agus líonaim na boscaí le glasraí agus le torthaí fosta. Ní bhíonn an lá i bhfad ag dul isteach.

I open up the shop from time to time and I also close the shop. When I'm working I serve the customers and I sell the vegetables. From time to time I clean the shop and fill the boxes with vegetables and fruit as well. The day doesn't be long passing.

6. Ar mhaith leat an post seo a dhéanamh go lánaimseartha? Would you like to do this job full-time?

Caitríona says:

Níor mhaith liom mar ba mhaith liom bheith i mo bhanaltra. Ba mhaith liom níos mó airgid.

No, because I would like to be a nurse. I would like more money.

Seán says:

Boy

Níor mhaith liom ar chor ar bith. Ba mhaith liom bheith i mo dhlíodóir. Ba mhaith liom a lán airgid a shaothrú agus ba mhaith liom post níos suimiúla. Cé go bhfuil an post páirtaimseartha ceart go leor bheadh níos mó airgid de dhíth orm amach anseo.

I wouldn't like to at all. I would like to be a lawyer. I would like to earn a lot of money and I would like a more interesting job. Although the part-time job's alright I would need more money later on.
