Applications and programming languages

Applications are programs written to carry out a specific task or set of tasks, for example: word processorsword processor: an application used to write, edit and format text, spreadsheetsspreadsheet: A spreadsheet is made up of cells, rows and columns. Each cell holds a piece of numeric (numbers) or alphanumeric (text) data. Cells can also contain formulae to calculate their contents., accounting packages, media players and games.

Types of applications software

Applications come in several different types:

  • Utility programs - examples include virus scannersvirus scanner: an application that scans a computer's hard disk and any other attached storage device for viruses, disk defragmentersdisk defragmenter: Data accessed at the same time but spread out across the hard disk is called fragmented data. A disk defragmenter is an application that groups this data together for faster access. and backupbackup: to copy data onto a separate storage device in case the original device should fail, be damaged or the data stored on it get corrupted utilities.
  • Generic - general purpose software that is not written for any particular type of business. Examples of this include word processors and spreadsheets.
  • Integrated - a collection of software that has a common set of commandscommand: a directive given to a computer program/icons. Usually they include word processors, spreadsheets and graphics softwaregraphics software: an application that assists a user in creating graphics, but they can contain databasesdatabase: a structured collection of records or data stored in a computer system as well. They tend to be cheaper than purchasing each application separately.
  • Specific - software written for a defined purpose. Accountancy software is a good example of this that can be bought by anyone.
  • Bespoke - bespoke software is written when a company requires a piece of software to perform a very specific task or function and there's no existing software that does what they need. It can be very expensive.
