Activity and answer preparation

Activity

To help you learn this information, play the decision-making game Surviving Vietnam. As you face each situation, make the best and safest choice you can.

The chances of a combat soldier being killed in Vietnam were one in five, and one in six of the Vietnam veterans ('vets') who survived have subsequently experienced depression, drug or alcohol addiction, or divorce.

Answer preparation

As part of your revision, think about the arguments and facts you would use to explain:

  1. What the nature of the Vietnam conflict was.
  2. How effective the Americans were in their attempts to defeat the Vietcong's guerrilla tactics.
  3. Whether this statement is true: "The Vietcong's tactics helped them to defeat the Americans; the Americans' tactics merely helped them to lose."
