Listening exam tips: healthy and unhealthy lifestyles

  • Make sure you learn the high frequency key words for each topic area you cover. Many of the words you need in German are similar to English and will be relatively easy to learn. Spend time learning gesund/Obst/Gemüse which are completely different but which come up very often.

  • Notice whether the speaker has used 'kein' (or keine or keinen) in their sentence. This means ‘not a’ or ‘not any’ and makes a crucial difference to a sentence (eg 'Ich esse kein Obst' = I eat no fruit/I don’t eat any fruit)

  • In many cases you can tell by the speaker’s tone of voice whether they are enthusiastic about the topic or not. Just like in English, if they sound cheerful and animated, you can assume they have a positive view of the subject, and this can help you make a sensible guess at the more general part of the answer even if you are unsure of the details.
