Ecosystems [ecosystems: communities of animals, plants and micro-organisms, together with the habitats where they live ] can be small-scale, covering a small area (such as a pond) or large-scale covering a large area (such as a tropical rainforest).

Biomes are large scale ecosystems defined by abiotic factors. These are:

  • climate
  • relief [relief: Relief is the height of the ground above sea level. ]
  • geology [geology: Geology is the study of the types of rocks that make up the earth's crust. ]
  • soils
  • vegetation
